In the Studio

Yesterday we went into Eastern Bloc Studios to record four newish songs, as I mentioned last time. The drums had been set up the night before, so it was a painless experience going in to set up. Doing the drums takes time, as you could imagine:

The Drum Room

We were in there from about 10 until 3, so it was great to get four songs down in that time. We just recorded the bass, drums and rhythm guitar parts for each tune - after we've edited those takes into good tracks we'll start adding keys, percussion, vocals etc. One of the nice things about how we recorded is that we did all the instruments at once, from start to finish with Rob just singing some guide vocals. It's nice to be so well rehearsed that we didn't even need to talk about what to play for each section and other arrangement stuff. Even though I was in another room from Jeremy and Gabe, knowing I was recording "live" with what I was listening to through the headphones makes a big difference. For one, you don't immediately stop playing if you make a tiny error. And even though I couldn't see them, I could still feel the interaction between instruments more than when playing overdubs.

Getting ready

It will be interesting to see how the tracks take shape in the next few weeks, as we start to play around with the mixing.
