2:42

Joseph lists some great songs that are 2:42 in length. So I tried it for myself, as you might see in the comments at his site. It's hard to dispute some of these:
Beatles: Michelle, Lovely Rita, Yellow Submarine
Blackalicious: Alphabet Aerobics
Bob Dylan: You Aint Going nowhere, If Not For You, Song to Woody,
Cat Power: Wonderwall
Elton John: Your Sister Can't Twist (but she can rock and roll)
Neil Young: Walk On
Puccini: Floria! Amore - as sung by Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano
Tom Waits: Black Box theme

It's also worth noting some of the other songs that crop up in that category.

Brad Mehldau: Intro (Live in Tokyo)
Laura Mikkola: Icons, Op. 6: Kristuksen kaste (The Baptism of Christ)
Paul Kelly: I Was Hoping You'd Say That
Stevie Wonder: Have a Talk With God
Sun Ra: Batman and Robin Swing
Uri Caine: Red Eye
Mekons: Where Were You.

If you extend the time period to 4:35 to 4:45 you start getting a lot more Dylan, a lot more Beatles, some Beastie Boys, Zappa, Pixies. White Stripes, etc.

But the thing that's really worth noticing is this: if you look at that time period, you'll find a lot of your favourite artists. But I bet you won't find your favourite song by that artist particularly if they're one of your favourite artists.

That is, if you only like a band for one song, it will probably fall in that time period. If you like a large body of an artist's work, I'm betting (based on the sample size of one: me) that your favourite song won't turn up.
